What should you know about a nickel allergy ear piercing reaction?

Nickel contact allergy is a delayed immune reaction. It may affect the front and back of the earlobe in the shape of the jewellery, with itching and irritation often more prominent than deep pain. A new piercing can also be irritated by pressure, cleaning products, or movement.

Infection may bring worsening tenderness, heat, swelling, spreading redness, discharge, or fever. These patterns can overlap, and cartilage piercings deserve particular caution because infection there can become serious. Do not assume every post-piercing rash is an allergy.
