NG tube throat irritation: what to know

A nasogastric, or NG, tube passes through the nose into the stomach. Its contact with the nose and throat can cause soreness, dryness, a scratchy or itchy feeling, coughing, or a sensation of something being present. Irritation can also be worsened by mouth breathing or dry air. Allergic rhinitis, a common cold, food allergy, or house dust mite allergy can cause similar throat symptoms, so the tube is not the only possible explanation.

Tell the nurse or clinician caring for you about discomfort so they can check the tube position, fixation, and the skin around the nose. Do not pull, advance, or remove the tube yourself. Follow the care team’s instructions about fluids, mouth care, and eating or drinking. Keep the mouth moist as permitted, and avoid smoke or other irritants. Allergy medication should only be used when a clinician or pharmacist says it fits your situation.

Seek urgent help for sudden breathing difficulty, choking, blue lips, severe chest pain, or inability to swallow saliva. Contact the care team promptly if the tube moves, feeds cause repeated coughing, you develop persistent vomiting, significant nosebleeding, fever, or pain that is increasing. A new itchy throat with facial swelling or wheezing can signal a serious allergic reaction.

Ask whether the tube is positioned and secured correctly, how long irritation should be expected, and which mouth-care measures are allowed. Ask what to do if the tube is displaced and whether allergy or infection symptoms need separate assessment.
