Nexium and skin rash: what to know

A medicine-related eruption may appear as red or blotchy areas, raised spots, widespread irritation, or itching. It can begin after starting Nexium or after a dose change, although timing alone cannot prove the cause. Other possibilities include contact irritation, eczema, heat, fungal infection, psoriasis, or an infestation. A drug rash is a skin response associated with a medicine; it is different from assuming every new rash is caused by that medicine.

Note when the rash began, where it started, whether it is spreading, and whether you also have fever, facial swelling, mouth sores, or breathing symptoms. Photos taken in good light can help a clinician compare changes.

Contact the prescriber or a pharmacist promptly and describe the rash, your Nexium dose, when you began it, and every other medicine or supplement you use. Do not restart a medicine that a clinician has told you to stop, and do not change essential treatment without advice. Use lukewarm water, a bland fragrance-free moisturiser, and loose clothing; avoid new creams, scrubs, and scratching until the cause is clearer.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat, faintness, rapidly blistering or peeling skin, severe skin pain, or sores involving the mouth or eyes. A rapidly spreading rash, fever, or feeling very unwell needs same-day medical assessment.

Ask whether the timing fits a drug eruption, whether Nexium should be paused or replaced, which symptoms require immediate action, and which skin products are suitable while the rash settles.
