What should you know about newborn yeast diaper rash?

Yeast can thrive in a warm, damp nappy area. The rash may look red and shiny, involve the creases, and have small separate spots around its edge. Irritant nappy rash more often affects the areas exposed to urine or stool while sparing deeper folds, but appearances overlap. A clinician may need to examine your newborn, especially if the rash is extensive or keeps returning.

This rash is not a sign that a baby is unclean. Frequent wetness, recent antibiotics, or skin irritation can change the local balance and make yeast more likely to overgrow.

Change nappies promptly, rinse or cleanse gently, and pat the skin dry. Give short, supervised nappy-free periods if the room is warm and the baby can stay comfortable.
