What should you know about newborn rash on body?

Newborn rashes may appear as flat red patches, tiny bumps, dry scales, or moist areas in folds. Heat and blocked sweat can cause prickly spots; a new detergent, fabric, wipe, or lotion can cause contact dermatitis. Dry itchy patches may fit atopic dermatitis. Ring-shaped scaling, intense itch, or a rash affecting close contacts can point toward conditions such as ringworm or scabies, while intertrigo affects rubbing, damp folds.

Describe where it started, how quickly it spread, and whether the baby is comfortable. Look for crust, fluid, peeling, bruising-like color, or involvement of the palms, soles, eyes, or mouth. A clinician may need to see the skin to distinguish common irritation from infection or another cause.

Keep the baby at a comfortable temperature and dress in soft, breathable layers. Bathe with lukewarm water, use fragrance-free products sparingly, and pat the skin dry. Stop any newly introduced lotion, detergent, wipe, or fabric until the cause is clearer. Do not scratch, peel, scrub, or use adult creams, powders, or leftover medicines.
