What should you know about newborn neck rash?

Milk, saliva, sweat, and bath water can collect beneath the chin and inside the neck folds. Constant dampness softens the surface, while rubbing from movement or clothing adds irritation. A red, moist fold may be intertrigo; tiny prickly spots after warmth may fit heat rash. Dry, rough or itchy areas can occur with atopic dermatitis, while a new product or fabric may trigger contact dermatitis.

The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Note whether the skin is moist, scaly, cracked, ring-shaped, blistered, or oozing, and whether the rash is confined to the fold or appearing elsewhere. A clinician may also consider infection or another skin condition.

Clean the fold gently with lukewarm water, then pat it completely dry rather than rubbing. During feeds, use a soft clean cloth to dab away milk or saliva. Choose loose, breathable clothing and avoid fragranced wipes, powders, essential oils, and adult medicated creams unless a clinician has advised them. Keep the baby comfortably cool, but do not leave the neck exposed to cold air for long periods.

Take a clear photograph in good light and record when the rash began, recent products, and whether it changes after feeds or warmth. Seek urgent medical advice if a newborn has a fever, seems unusually sleepy or difficult to wake, feeds poorly, breathes differently, or has rapidly spreading redness.
