Newborn hiccups in sleep: what parents should know

Short answer
Newborn hiccups during sleep are often brief and harmless; keep sleep safe and check breathing rather than trying to stop them.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why hiccups may continue while asleep
The diaphragm can contract rhythmically after a feed, so hiccups may continue while a newborn is drowsy or asleep. A sleeping baby with normal colour, easy breathing, and a settled body usually needs observation rather than a remedy. Hiccups are not, on their own, evidence of reflux or gastritis. Watch for a pattern linked with coughing, repeated spit-up, discomfort, or difficulty feeding, because those details may need a clinical review.
Keep the response gentle and safe
Look at your baby's colour and chest movement without waking them unnecessarily. Place your baby on their back on a firm, flat, separate sleep surface with loose items kept out of the sleep space. Do not use pillows, wedges, sleep positioners, or an inclined surface to stop hiccups. If your baby wakes and seems comfortable, you can hold them upright while awake and supervised. Avoid startling, pulling the tongue, or offering liquids.
When sleep-time hiccups need help
Call emergency services if your baby has laboured or paused breathing, blue or grey lips, choking, or is unusually floppy and hard to rouse. Seek prompt advice when hiccups repeatedly wake the baby, breathing sounds abnormal, feeds are poor, vomiting is forceful or green, or wet nappies fall noticeably. A video of the movement can help a clinician distinguish hiccups from another repeated motion.
Useful questions
Ask whether your baby's sleep position and feeding routine are appropriate, how to tell hiccups from breathing problems, and which changes in colour, effort, or responsiveness require urgent action.

Questions people ask
Should I wake my newborn when hiccups happen in sleep?
If colour and breathing are normal, you usually do not need to wake your baby just to stop hiccups.
Can I raise the mattress for sleeping hiccups?
No. Keep the sleep surface firm and flat; inclined or padded products can make sleep unsafe.
