Short answer

Newborn hiccups during breastfeeding are usually harmless, but pause the feed and check for signs of distress.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What hiccups can mean

Hiccups are repeated contractions of the diaphragm, the breathing muscle below the lungs. A baby may swallow air, feed quickly, or become unsettled while nursing, which can trigger this reflex. Hiccups alone do not show that a baby has reflux, gastritis, or another illness. If they occur with frequent spit-up, back-arching, coughing, or feeding refusal, discuss the whole pattern with a clinician; those associated features help guide assessment.

What you can do during a breastfeed

Stop briefly when the hiccups begin and hold your baby upright with the head and neck supported. Let the baby relax, then offer the breast again when calm. A slower pace, a comfortable latch, and a brief pause to burp can reduce swallowed air. Keep the baby upright for a short period after the feed while awake and supervised. Do not frighten, startle, give water, or use home remedies, and never prop a baby for feeding.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help if hiccups occur with blue or grey lips, struggling or paused breathing, marked limpness, or choking. Contact your baby's clinician promptly if feeding repeatedly becomes difficult, vomiting is forceful or green, wet nappies are noticeably reduced, or your baby seems unusually sleepy or in pain. A clinician can check feeding technique, hydration, breathing, and growth rather than judging the hiccups in isolation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the latch and feeding position look suitable, whether the pattern could fit reflux, and what signs would mean your baby needs an examination. Bring a simple note of when hiccups occur, how feeds go, spit-up, and wet nappies.
