What should you know about new treatment for oral lichen planus?

Oral lichen planus may appear as fine white lines or patches inside the cheeks, on the tongue, or along the gums. Some people have burning, soreness, sensitivity to spicy or acidic foods, or open areas that make eating uncomfortable. Skin findings may occur at the same time, but mouth symptoms can need their own examination and treatment plan.

A clinician may prescribe a topical corticosteroid formulated for the mouth to reduce local inflammation. Oral corticosteroid treatment is reserved for selected situations and requires a review of your health history, medicines, and response. A dentist, dermatologist, or oral-medicine specialist may check a persistent, thickened, ulcerated, or changing area and decide whether further testing is needed.

Arrange an assessment for ongoing mouth soreness, white markings, or ulcers rather than assuming they are simple irritation. Tell the clinician about tobacco or alcohol use, dental appliances, new medicines, and whether symptoms affect eating, swallowing, or sleep. Use the prescribed medicine exactly as directed; mouth rinsing, timing, and avoiding food or drink around an application may matter.

Choose a soft toothbrush, use gentle toothpaste if regular products sting, and avoid smoking, alcohol-based mouthwash, and foods that trigger burning. Keep dental appointments so gum health and any persistent lesion can be reviewed together.

Seek prompt review for an ulcer that persists, bleeding, a firm or thickened area, worsening pain, difficulty swallowing, reduced food or fluid intake, or a new lump in the mouth or neck. Urgent care is appropriate for trouble breathing, rapidly increasing swelling, or inability to swallow fluids.
