What should you know about new MRI for prostate cancer detection?

A multiparametric prostate MRI uses different image sequences to examine prostate structure and tissue behaviour. It can help locate an area that needs closer attention, guide a targeted biopsy, and support planning when prostate cancer has already been diagnosed. An MRI finding is not, by itself, a cancer diagnosis; inflammation, benign enlargement and other changes can look abnormal.

The radiologist’s report is considered alongside symptoms, examination, prostate-specific antigen results and biopsy findings. MRI may reduce unnecessary procedures for some people, but a clinician may still recommend biopsy or repeat testing when the images and other information do not match.

Tell the imaging team about metal implants, a pacemaker, kidney problems, previous reactions to contrast, and the possibility of pregnancy for anyone who may be pregnant. Follow the centre’s instructions about food, drink and bowel preparation. Remove metal objects and wear clothing without zips or fasteners when asked.

The scan requires you to remain still in a narrow space while the machine makes loud sounds. Ear protection is provided, and you can usually communicate with the technologist. Ask about an alternative plan if you have claustrophobia. Afterward, arrange follow-up so the result is explained in the context of your PSA trend and any recommended biopsy.

MRI itself does not usually cause a delayed emergency, but contact the imaging centre promptly for a new rash, facial swelling, wheezing or faintness after contrast. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty or collapse.

Outside the scan, difficulty passing urine, inability to empty the bladder, fever with urinary symptoms, or blood in the urine needs prompt medical assessment. These symptoms can have several causes and do not by themselves establish prostate cancer.

Why is MRI recommended now? Will contrast be used? What will happen if the scan shows a suspicious area or is unclear? Could the result change the need for biopsy or the biopsy route? When will the report be reviewed alongside my PSA and examination?
