What should you know about nevus of ito and ota?

Nevus of Ota, also called oculodermal melanocytosis, usually appears as blue, grey or brown pigmentation around the eye, on the forehead or cheek. It can involve the white of the eye. Nevus of Ito has a similar pigment pattern but is usually found around the shoulder, upper chest or upper arm.

The colour comes from pigment-producing cells located deeper in the skin than ordinary surface freckles. The mark may be present from childhood or become more noticeable over time. A clinician checks the skin and, for nevus of Ota, may examine the eye because pigment involving ocular tissues deserves ongoing attention.

Arrange a dermatology assessment when the diagnosis is uncertain, the colour is changing, or the area is new. Bring information about when the mark first appeared and any symptoms involving the eye. If treatment is wanted for appearance or the pigment persists, a clinician may discuss laser toning or picosecond laser treatment. These approaches use light energy to target pigment and are usually planned as a course rather than a single session.

Ask about expected temporary redness, darkening or lightening after treatment and how to protect the skin from ultraviolet exposure. Treatment choice depends on pigment depth, location, skin tone and eye involvement.

Seek an eye assessment for new blurred vision, eye pain, flashes, a change in the visible pigmented area or other visual symptoms. Arrange a prompt skin review if the mark develops a distinct new nodule, bleeding, ulceration or a rapid change that differs from its long-standing pattern. Urgent care is appropriate for sudden loss of vision or severe eye pain.
