What should you know about neuroblastoma adrenal medulla?

The adrenal glands sit above the kidneys. Their inner part, called the adrenal medulla, contains nerve-related cells and helps make certain stress hormones. Neuroblastoma develops from immature nerve tissue and may arise near or within this area, especially in children. A mass can cause abdominal fullness, pain, reduced appetite or pressure on nearby structures, but some tumours are found during assessment for another reason. Symptoms alone cannot identify the tumour or its stage.

A clinical team may use an examination, urine tests, blood tests and scans such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography. A sample of tumour tissue may be examined when appropriate. The team also considers the child’s age, tumour biology, location and spread when describing risk and choosing treatment.

Arrange assessment with a paediatric oncology team if neuroblastoma is suspected or has been diagnosed. Keep copies of scan reports, pathology information and medication details. Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen or hard abdomen, trouble breathing, fainting, new weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. During treatment, contact the oncology team promptly for fever, unusual bleeding, marked sleepiness or signs of dehydration, because these may need same-day assessment.

Ask where the tumour started, whether it involves the adrenal medulla, what tests are still needed, and what the scans show about nearby organs or distant sites. Ask how the team will protect kidney, liver and hormone function, which treatment comes first, and which symptoms should trigger an immediate call.
