Neural Tube Defects Symptoms: What to Know

The neural tube forms the early structures that become the brain and spinal cord. When it does not close fully, the result can involve the spine, brain, or both. Some defects are visible on a pregnancy scan, while others may be recognised after birth through changes in movement, muscle strength, sensation, bladder or bowel control, or head growth. Anencephaly and spina bifida are different forms, so one symptom list cannot describe every baby.

A scan finding is not the same as a complete prediction of a child's needs. The location and extent of the change matter, and further assessment can help clarify what has been seen.

Keep scheduled antenatal appointments and ask which scan identified the concern. Your clinician may arrange a detailed anomaly scan, repeat imaging, or referral to fetal medicine, genetics, paediatrics, or neurosurgery. Take written notes about the suspected type, location, and recommended next steps. Preconception care is also useful for discussing folic acid, existing conditions, and medicines before a future pregnancy.

Do not rely on a home symptom check to confirm or exclude a neural tube defect. Pregnancy imaging and specialist review are needed to interpret findings.

Contact your maternity team promptly if a scan report mentions a possible neural tube defect, or if you are told that follow-up imaging is needed. After birth, urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, marked weakness, seizures, a rapidly enlarging head, or a visible opening or sac along the spine. These signs need clinical examination rather than observation at home.

Ask: What type of defect is suspected? Where is it located? What did the scan show clearly, and what remains uncertain? Which specialists should we meet? What monitoring is planned during pregnancy or after birth? What support and treatment might be available immediately after delivery?
