Nervous irritability: what to know
Short answer
Nervous irritability can show up as a short temper, inner tension or low tolerance, and persistent change deserves a health assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible clues
- Poor sleep, stress, missed meals, low mood or inner tension
- Useful record
- Triggers, sleep, meals, caffeine, alcohol and medicines
What it can mean
Irritability may accompany stress, inadequate sleep, anxiety, depression or burnout. It can also be related to missed meals, Hypoglycaemia, pain, medication effects or withdrawal from alcohol or other substances. Insomnia may create a cycle in which poor sleep lowers patience and tension makes sleep harder. Notice whether the change is new, constant, linked to a situation, or accompanied by racing thoughts, low mood, trembling, sweating or reduced need for sleep.
What to do
Pause before responding when you notice rising tension: step away briefly, slow your breathing and return when you can speak safely. Eat regular balanced meals, reduce excess caffeine, keep a consistent sleep routine and write down triggers, sleep and medicines. Use Insomnia Management strategies if poor sleep is involved. Book an appointment when irritability lasts, harms relationships, affects work or feels unlike your usual self.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if irritability comes with thoughts of self-harm or harming someone else, severe confusion, hallucinations, chest pain, fainting or dangerous impulsive behaviour. Prompt assessment is also needed for a sudden major mood change, several nights with little sleep, severe agitation, or symptoms of low blood sugar such as sweating, shaking and confusion.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit anxiety, depression, burnout, insomnia or a physical cause. Discuss sleep, meals, caffeine, alcohol, medicines and menstrual or other hormonal changes. Ask what support is available, whether testing is appropriate and which warning signs should prompt urgent help.
