Neck swelling in pregnancy: what to know

Mild swelling in the feet and ankles can occur as pregnancy changes fluid balance and circulation. Swelling of the face, hands, or neck, especially when sudden or marked, needs a clinician to check blood pressure and urine because it can occur with pre-eclampsia. It may also reflect an allergy, thyroid problem, infection, or another cause. Swelling alone cannot identify the cause. The timing, speed of change, associated symptoms, and examination all matter.

Contact your maternity team promptly and describe where the swelling is, when it began, and whether it is worsening. Attend a blood-pressure and urine check rather than relying on home impressions. Resting on your side, staying hydrated, and removing tight rings may help comfort while you arrange advice, but these measures do not replace assessment. Do not take water tablets, herbal products, or another person’s medicine without professional guidance.

Seek urgent maternity care for swelling with severe headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain beneath the ribs, vomiting, sudden breathlessness, confusion, fainting, or feeling very unwell. Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, or collapse, as these can indicate a serious allergic reaction or other emergency. Reduced fetal movement also needs immediate maternity advice.

Ask what your blood pressure and urine results show, whether blood tests or observation are needed, and how to monitor the swelling. Ask which symptoms should send you directly to hospital and when your next pregnancy check should take place.
