Neck Ringworm: What to Know

Ringworm often begins as a scaly or itchy patch that gradually enlarges, sometimes leaving clearer skin toward the centre and a more active edge. The neck may be exposed to spread from another skin site, a shared towel, clothing, sports contact, or an infected pet. A general Skin Rash or Scaly Skin description does not establish the cause: eczema, psoriasis, and contact irritation can resemble fungal infection. A clinician may diagnose it from the appearance and, when needed, test skin scale.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, razors, collars, clothing, or pillowcases; wash items that touch the rash regularly. Avoid covering it with heavy occlusive products unless a clinician advises this. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend Topical Antifungal Treatment for a limited patch. More extensive, recurrent, hair-bearing, or treatment-resistant infection may need Oral Antifungal Treatment. Use the recommended treatment for the full advised course, even if the surface looks better sooner, and do not apply a steroid alone to an undiagnosed scaly rash.

Seek medical advice if the patch is spreading, painful, oozing, crusted, affecting the scalp or beard area, or not improving with appropriate treatment. Ask for prompt assessment if someone close to you or a pet has a suspected fungal infection. Urgent care is appropriate for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, or eye involvement.
