Nd:YAG identifies the light source and wavelength, while picosecond identifies how briefly each pulse is delivered. The brief pulse can create a photoacoustic effect that breaks selected pigment into smaller particles, rather than relying only on prolonged heating. The clinician chooses wavelength, energy, spot size, and pulse pattern according to the target and the skin around it.

Possible uses include tattoo ink and selected pigment concerns, but a dark mark is not automatically suitable for laser treatment.
