What should you know about naxitamab neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is a cancer of specialised nerve tissue, often arising near the adrenal glands or along the nerve pathways in the chest, abdomen, or pelvis. Naxitamab is designed to bind to a marker on many neuroblastoma cells, helping the immune system recognise them. It is used only in particular clinical situations, such as disease that has returned or has not responded adequately to earlier care.

Treatment decisions depend on the child’s age, disease location, previous therapies, symptoms, organ function, and treatment goals. Naxitamab may be considered alongside other approaches, including chemotherapy, surgery, or targeted radioisotope therapy. The treating team explains the exact plan.

Ask the team how the medicine will be given, what premedication is needed, how pain will be managed, and how long monitoring lasts. Keep a record of fever, pain, blood pressure concerns, weakness, tingling, breathing changes, and medicines given at home. Attend planned blood tests and tell the team about allergies, infections, and previous reactions to infusions.

Because reactions can occur during or after administration, treatment is delivered where trained staff can observe and respond. Do not add or stop medicines without checking with the oncology team.

Contact the treatment team urgently for fever, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, severe pain, fainting, new weakness, confusion, persistent vomiting, or reduced urine. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing problems, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
