Nausea and numb hands: what to know

Numbness in both hands can occur during fast or shallow breathing, sometimes with tingling around the mouth and lightheadedness. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, or low blood sugar can combine nausea with weakness, sweating, shaking, or dizziness. Food poisoning and gastroenteritis may cause fluid loss, while gastritis or acid reflux can explain nausea without causing hand numbness. Gallstones and hepatitis A have digestive features that may help identify a different cause.

Note whether numbness affects one or both hands, began suddenly, follows pressure on an arm, or comes with headache, speech change, weakness, or balance problems.

Sit somewhere safe and loosen tight clothing. Breathe slowly and gently rather than taking repeated large breaths. Sip fluids if you may be dehydrated, and move to a cool place after heat exposure. If you have diabetes or use glucose-lowering medicine, follow your established plan for checking and treating low glucose. Do not drive while numbness, dizziness, or nausea affects you. Arrange review if the sensation persists or keeps returning.

Call emergency services for sudden numbness or weakness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, new confusion, severe headache, loss of balance, chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, or blue lips. Seek urgent assessment for persistent vomiting, severe dehydration, a very low glucose reading that does not improve under your plan, or worsening symptoms after heat exposure.

Ask whether the pattern suggests breathing changes, glucose disturbance, dehydration, nerve pressure, or another problem. Ask if you need glucose or other checks, how to prevent recurrence, and which symptoms should send you directly to emergency care.
