What should you know about nausea and no appetite?

Nausea and no appetite can happen with a short-lived illness, digestive irritation, medication effects, heat, or other conditions; fluids, small bland meals, and attention to warning signs can help. Nausea means feeling that you may vomit, while reduced appetite means having less interest in food. They may occur together, with or without vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, fever, headache, or tiredness.

What it may mean

A stomach or bowel infection can cause nausea, appetite loss, vomiting, cramps, or loose stools. Food poisoning and gastroenteritis are examples. Upper digestive irritation, including gastritis or acid reflux, may bring nausea with burning, discomfort, or an unpleasant taste. Gallstones can cause nausea with pain in the upper right abdomen, especially after a rich meal. Heat exhaustion may include nausea, weakness, sweating, dizziness, and thirst. Hepatitis A can present with nausea and poor appetite alongside marked tiredness or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Low blood sugar may cause nausea, sweating, shaking, weakness, or confusion. Medicines, pregnancy, anxiety, and other illnesses can also contribute, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

What you can do

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with very small sips. Try small portions of plain foods such as toast, rice, bananas, soup, or yoghurt when you feel able; avoid forcing a full meal. Limit alcohol, very fatty meals, and strong smells if they worsen symptoms. Rest somewhere cool, and review any new medicine with a pharmacist or clinician rather than stopping a prescribed treatment on your own. Keep track of urination, vomiting, pain, fever, and whether you can keep fluids down.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, new confusion, blood in vomit or stool, a stiff neck with severe headache, or yellow skin or eyes. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate much less than usual, feel very dizzy, or show signs of significant dehydration. Contact a clinician if nausea and poor appetite persist, keep returning, or are causing unintended weight loss. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with diabetes or a long-term illness may need advice sooner.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what could explain the combination of symptoms, whether a medicine or recent food exposure may be contributing, and which fluids or foods are suitable for you. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether vomiting or diarrhoea is present, where any pain is located, and how often you are urinating. Mention pregnancy possibility, diabetes, recent travel, fever, and any new or changed medicines.
