What a sore throat can mean
Throat pain often accompanies a viral infection such as a common cold or influenza. Allergic rhinitis and acid reflux can irritate the throat without causing a typical infection. Tonsillitis and strep throat may cause stronger pain, fever, swollen tonsils or difficulty swallowing. COVID-19 can also include throat symptoms, so other symptoms and local testing advice may matter.
Comfort measures
Sip fluids at a temperature that feels comfortable, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe irritation; do not give salt-water gargles to young children who cannot spit safely. Rest your voice, avoid smoke and dry air, and use a clean humidifier if needed. Honey in a warm drink may help adults and children over twelve months, but never give honey to an infant. Do not share cups or utensils while unwell.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange medical advice for a high fever, rash, dehydration, repeated sore throats, or pain that does not start improving. Testing or treatment may be needed when strep throat, tonsillitis, glandular fever, influenza or COVID-19 is suspected.
