Natural ways to remove cradle cap

Short answer
Gentle oil-free softening, washing, and brushing can loosen cradle cap, but never pick scales or use harsh products on a baby’s scalp.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Use
- Gentle baby cleanser, soft brush, and clinician-approved emollient
- Avoid
- Picking, essential oils, adult dandruff products, and fragrance
What cradle cap is
Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry scales on the scalp. It is usually not painful or dangerous, and it is not caused by poor hygiene. Scales may also appear around the eyebrows, ears, or skin folds.
The surface can look yellow, white, or reddish depending on the baby’s skin tone. Scratching can create tiny breaks in the skin, allowing irritation to worsen.
Gentle home care
Apply a small amount of a baby-appropriate emollient to the scalp for a short period to soften attached scales, then wash with a gentle baby shampoo. Loosen only what lifts easily with a soft baby brush or washcloth. Rinse thoroughly and stop if the skin becomes red or sore.
Do not use essential oils, adult dandruff shampoo, fragranced products, or medicated creams unless a clinician recommends them. Repeating gentle washing is safer than trying to remove every scale in one session. A clinician may suggest emollient therapy when ordinary care is not enough.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if the rash spreads beyond the scalp, becomes very red, cracked, swollen, wet, or painful, or if the baby seems unwell. Seek review for hair loss, pus, fever, or a rash that does not improve with gentle care. Another skin condition or infection may need different treatment, including topical antifungal treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which cleanser and emollient suit your baby’s age, how long to leave a softening product on, and how often to wash. Ask how to tell ordinary cradle cap from eczema or infection, and whether a medicated product is needed.

Questions people ask
Does cradle cap need to be removed completely?
No. It can be loosened gradually, and remaining scales often shed with gentle washing.
Can I scratch off thick scales?
No. Picking can break the skin and increase irritation or infection risk.
