Natural ways to manage strep throat

Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by streptococcal bacteria. A sore throat, fever, swollen glands, painful swallowing, and inflamed tonsils can occur. Viruses can cause similar symptoms, so symptoms alone do not always identify the cause.

A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate. Tonsillitis can overlap with strep throat, but the terms do not describe exactly the same thing.

Drink frequent fluids and choose soft foods that are easier to swallow. Warm drinks, cool foods, rest, and gargling with warm salty water may ease irritation for some people. Avoid smoking and smoky rooms. Use pain or fever medicine only as directed on the label or by a clinician, especially for children or anyone with another medical condition.

If antibiotic treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, towels, or toothbrushes while contagious, and wash hands regularly.

Arrange a GP consultation for severe or persistent throat pain, fever, swollen glands, or difficulty swallowing, particularly when there is no cough and the illness began suddenly. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, a muffled voice, one-sided throat swelling, or worsening weakness.

Ask whether your symptoms need a strep test, which pain relief is suitable, whether antibiotics are indicated, when you can return to school or work, and what worsening signs should trigger urgent review.
