Short answer

Pause close shaving, use warm water and a clean sharp razor, and avoid picking while irritated follicles recover from razor bumps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What causes the bumps

Razor bumps form when a cut hair curves back into the skin and triggers inflammation. They may be itchy or tender, and darker marks can remain after the bump settles. Folliculitis can look similar but involves inflammation around follicles and may include pus. Keratosis Pilaris is a different rough, follicular pattern that often affects the upper arms or thighs.

Repeated close shaving, waxing, tight clothing, and picking can keep the cycle going. The location and timing after hair removal help guide the diagnosis.

Calm and prevent them

Stop shaving the area until tenderness settles. When you resume, soften hair with warm water, apply a lubricating shave gel, shave in the direction of growth with light pressure, and avoid repeated passes. Rinse the blade between strokes and do not share razors. Wear loose clothing where rubbing contributes.

Do not dig out buried hairs with a needle or squeeze bumps. If episodes keep returning, a dermatologist can discuss topical treatment or Laser Hair Removal as a longer-term hair-reduction option for suitable skin and hair types.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, severe pain, fever, or bumps that leave thick scars. Seek review when the eruption persists despite stopping shaving, because it may be Folliculitis or another condition rather than simple razor irritation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps are ingrown hairs, folliculitis, or another rash; which shaving method fits your skin; and whether preventive treatment could reduce recurrent inflammation.

Questions people ask

Should I exfoliate razor bumps?

Harsh exfoliation can worsen inflammation; wait until the skin is calm and ask which gentle product is appropriate.

Can razor bumps become infected?

Yes. Increasing warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever should prompt medical assessment.
