Natural Remedies for Lice: What You Should Know

Head lice live on the scalp and attach their eggs, called nits, to hair close to the skin. Household oils, vinegar, mayonnaise, herbal mixtures, and essential oils are often described as natural solutions, but they may not kill every live louse or remove every viable nit. Some can irritate the scalp, trigger an allergy, or make the hair harder to inspect.

The most useful non-drug approach is wet combing. Conditioner slows the lice and helps a fine-toothed lice comb move through small sections of damp hair. This removes insects and some nits physically, but it takes patience and repeated checks because newly hatched lice can be missed. Lice do not come from poor hygiene, and pets are not the usual source of head lice in people.

Check the scalp in bright light, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. Separate the hair into small sections, apply conditioner, and draw a fine-toothed comb from the roots to the ends. Wipe the comb after each pass and continue until the whole scalp has been examined. Follow the timing and repeat instructions for any pharmacy or clinician-recommended product; using more than directed can harm the scalp without improving treatment.

Check close household contacts rather than treating everyone automatically. Wash recently used pillowcases, hats, and clothing, and soak combs and brushes in hot water. Avoid kerosene, petrol, insect sprays, and undiluted essential oils: these can cause poisoning, burns, or breathing problems. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or hair accessories until the infestation is under control.

Speak with a pharmacist or clinician if live lice remain after careful combing and the directed treatment course, if the scalp has open sores or spreading redness, or if scratching has caused pus, crusting, or marked pain. Ask for advice before using a lice product on a young child, during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or on a person with a seizure disorder or sensitive skin.

Arrange medical advice when the diagnosis is uncertain. Dandruff, product residue, and other scalp conditions can resemble nits, while an itchy scalp can persist briefly after lice have been removed. Urgent help is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe burning, or suspected poisoning after a home remedy.
