Natural Cradle Cap Treatment: What Parents Should Know

Short answer
Natural cradle cap care focuses on softening scales gently, washing the scalp, and avoiding picking or harsh products.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cradle cap means
Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry flakes and sometimes mild redness on a baby’s scalp. It is not a sign that the scalp is dirty. A baby may have scales around the hairline, behind the ears, or in the eyebrows as well.
The surface can look stubborn because scales cling to the skin and hair. Scratching or lifting them forcefully can cause soreness, small breaks in the skin, or bleeding. The condition may improve and return in patches, so gentle, consistent care is more useful than vigorous scrubbing.
Gentle steps at home
Before washing, apply a small amount of a plain emollient to the affected scalp and leave it briefly to soften the scales. Use a soft baby brush or washcloth to loosen only what comes away easily, then wash with a mild baby shampoo and rinse well. Do not use essential oils, fragranced products, adult dandruff shampoo, or home mixtures that may irritate infant skin.
Keep fingernails away from the flakes and do not share combs or brushes. If the scale is extensive, inflamed, or not settling, a clinician can check whether another skin problem is present and may recommend an appropriate treatment such as [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) or [Topical Antifungal Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-antifungal-therapy/).
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if the scalp is very red, swollen, warm, wet, bleeding, or producing pus; if the baby seems unwell; or if hair loss occurs in distinct areas. Seek advice when the rash spreads beyond the scalp, causes marked discomfort, or does not improve with gentle care. A clinician can distinguish cradle cap from infection, eczema, or another rash and guide treatment safely for the baby’s age.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be cradle cap or another rash? Which cleanser and emollient are suitable for my baby? Should I stop brushing if the skin becomes sore? Would treatment be needed for redness, discharge, or persistent scale?
