What should you know about nasal pyogenic granuloma?

Pyogenic granuloma, also called lobular capillary haemangioma, is a non-cancerous growth made up of small blood vessels. On or inside the nose it may appear bright red, smooth or crusted, and can become irritated by rubbing, picking or minor trauma. Bleeding can be disproportionate to the lump’s size. Several conditions can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Book an assessment with a doctor, particularly if the lump is enlarging or repeatedly bleeding. Do not squeeze, cut or scrape it. If bleeding starts, sit upright, lean slightly forward and apply steady gentle pressure to the soft part of the nose. Keep the area moist only with advice suitable for the nasal location, and tell the clinician about trauma, nose picking, pregnancy, medicines that affect bleeding and previous episodes.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, continues despite sustained pressure, causes dizziness or weakness, or makes breathing difficult. Prompt review is also appropriate for a lump with severe pain, spreading redness, fever, foul discharge or rapid change. A clinician may recommend removal and tissue examination; curettage and cautery is one possible treatment, chosen according to the site and appearance.
