Yeast nappy rash: signs and treatment

Yeast can multiply more readily in warm, moist, covered skin. The rash may be sharply red, sore, and present in the groin folds rather than only on the areas that touch the nappy. Small separate bumps can sit beyond the main red area. Irritant dermatitis can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm yeast. Recent antibiotic use, diarrhoea, or a rash that keeps returning may be useful details for a clinician, but they do not establish the diagnosis.

Change nappies frequently, clean gently with water or a mild fragrance-free option, and pat the area dry. Use short nappy-free periods and avoid talc, scented products, and scrubbing. A clinician may prescribe or recommend an antifungal cream when yeast is suspected; apply it exactly as directed and keep it away from the mouth and eyes. Arrange review if the rash is spreading, very sore, cracked, bleeding, blistered, or not improving after the advised treatment. Seek prompt care if your baby has fever, seems unwell, is feeding poorly, or has fewer wet nappies. Recurrent episodes also merit review so other causes and triggers can be considered.

Ask whether the rash is likely to be yeast, how long treatment should continue, whether a barrier can be used alongside it, and what changes would mean the diagnosis needs reassessment.
