Nappy rash teething treatment: what to know

During teething, babies may drool more, chew objects, and have changes in feeding or bowel habits. Loose or frequent stools can irritate skin already exposed to moisture, urine, and faeces. Teething itself does not prove that a rash is caused by a tooth. Look at the skin: simple irritant rash is often red and sore on areas covered by the nappy, while yeast can involve the folds and have smaller spots around the main rash.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly. Rinse with lukewarm water or use fragrance-free wipes, then pat rather than rub. Give short nappy-free periods when practical and apply a thick protective barrier to clean, dry skin. Avoid scented products, talc, and scrubbing. If the rash is persistent, involves the folds, or has satellite spots, a clinician may recommend an antifungal treatment; do not use a medicated cream without advice. Arrange medical advice if the rash is worsening, spreading, very painful, blistered, oozing, or not improving with careful home care. Seek prompt help if your baby seems unwell, has a fever, is feeding poorly, or has fewer wet nappies. Bleeding, open skin, or marked swelling also deserves assessment because broken skin can become infected.

Ask whether the appearance fits irritation, yeast, or another skin problem; which barrier product is suitable; how often to apply it; and whether any treatment should be stopped when the skin clears.
