What should you know about nail lifted off nail bed?

The detached portion often looks white because air has entered beneath it. It may catch on clothing, feel tender after pressure, or collect debris. A single nail may lift after a blow, tight footwear, manicure trauma, or repeated chemical exposure. Several nails, thickening, yellowing, crumbling, or skin scaling can point toward an underlying condition such as nail fungus. Pitting, ridges, or other inflammatory skin changes may suggest nail psoriasis. The detached section usually cannot be reattached; care focuses on the cause and on protecting new growth.

Keep the nail short and smooth, but do not pull off attached nail or cut into the nail bed. Cover a vulnerable edge with a light dressing during activities, keep it dry, and avoid polish or extensions until the cause is clearer. A clinician may recommend treatment for nail fungus or nail psoriasis when those conditions are present. Nail surgery is sometimes discussed for a severely damaged or repeatedly troublesome nail, but it is not needed for every case.

Seek assessment if separation follows a significant injury, keeps spreading, or does not begin to settle as the nail grows. Prompt care is appropriate for severe pain, bleeding that continues, redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or a dark change that was not explained by an injury.
