A common pattern begins at the free edge and spreads inward, making the nail look yellow, white, or brown and causing debris to collect underneath. Another pattern starts on the surface as pale patches. Infection can also begin near the cuticle, although this is less typical. In advanced cases, the nail may become thick, crumbly, misshapen, or partly separated from its bed. Athlete’s foot can coexist with nail fungus because the same type of fungus may move from skin to nails. Discoloured nails have other possible causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm an infection.

Keep feet clean and dry, change damp socks, and avoid sharing nail tools. Do not scrape deeply under the nail or cover a changing nail with polish for long periods. A clinician may examine the nail and take a small sample before choosing treatment. Options can include topical antifungal treatment for selected infections, oral antifungal treatment when broader treatment is appropriate, or laser treatment for nail fungus. Nail surgery is reserved for particular situations rather than being the routine first step.

Arrange a medical assessment if a nail is persistently changing, painful, lifting, or spreading to several nails. Seek prompt care for redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or rapidly worsening tenderness around the nail. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system should have a low threshold for professional assessment because a small foot problem can become harder to manage.

Ask whether the appearance needs a nail sample, which pattern is most likely, whether nearby skin is involved, and how long visible improvement may take after treatment. Discuss medication interactions and what changes should prompt a follow-up visit.
