Nail bruising after gel nails

Blood trapped under the nail may look red, purple, brown, or nearly black. Tenderness is common soon after an injury. Gel colour can hide changes, and lifting or scraping the product may irritate the nail surface further. Keep the nail clean, dry, and trimmed only where it is loose. Do not pierce it, peel off remaining gel, or apply another set over a painful nail. Protect a toe from rubbing with roomy footwear and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods during the first day. Arrange prompt assessment for worsening pain, marked swelling, an open wound, pus, a nail that is becoming detached, or a finger or toe that is difficult to move.
