N-MYC gene and neuroblastoma: what to know

N-MYC is a gene involved in cell growth. In neuroblastoma, the laboratory may assess whether tumour cells contain extra copies of this gene, a finding called amplification. The result is interpreted with the child’s age, tumour stage, tumour biology, scan findings and response to treatment.

An N-MYC result does not, by itself, describe the whole outlook or select one treatment for every child. The oncology team uses the full risk assessment to balance treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Some children with high-risk disease may also be considered for targeted radioisotope therapy.

Ask for the exact wording of the laboratory report and whether it refers to amplification, copy number or another measurement. Ask how the result fits with the stage and other tumour features, and whether testing was performed on a representative sample.

Contact the child’s oncology team promptly for persistent fever, unusual bruising or bleeding, worsening pain, repeated vomiting, reduced alertness, or difficulty breathing.
