What the first stage describes

Staging describes how much skin is involved and whether there is evidence of disease outside the skin. In an early stage, changes may be flat or mildly thickened and may cover a limited or more extensive skin area without confirmed involvement of lymph nodes or internal organs. Symptoms can include itch, dryness, scale, or altered colour.

Managing early disease

Your clinician may map the affected areas, review biopsy results, and photograph the skin for comparison. Prescribed Topical Corticosteroids can calm inflammation. Narrowband UVB Phototherapy or PUVA Therapy may be considered when multiple areas need treatment. Use the treatment exactly as directed and keep scheduled reviews, even when patches fade.

Changes that need review

Tell your clinician if a patch becomes distinctly thicker, forms a tumour-like lump, breaks down, bleeds, or becomes painful. Contact the team sooner for rapidly spreading disease, persistent fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or new enlarged lymph nodes.
