Myasthenia and thymoma: what should I know?

Thymoma is a tumour of the thymus, an organ behind the breastbone. Myasthenia gravis is an immune-related disorder that disrupts communication between nerves and muscles. It may cause fluctuating weakness, drooping eyelids, double vision, facial fatigue, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or a change in speech. A thymoma does not explain every weakness symptom, and myasthenia can occur without a thymoma.

Assessment may include chest imaging, neurological examination, blood tests, and review of breathing and swallowing. The team may involve neurology, oncology, surgery, and respiratory specialists.

Keep a record of weakness patterns, especially changes later in the day or after repeated activity. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and tell every clinician about myasthenia before a procedure, because some medicines and anaesthetic choices can worsen muscle weakness. Treatment for thymoma may include Tumour Removal Surgery, with Radiotherapy considered in selected situations according to the tumour’s features and surgical findings. The neurological plan continues alongside tumour care.

Call emergency services for rapidly worsening breathlessness, weak coughing, inability to swallow safely, choking, or severe weakness affecting the neck or limbs. A myasthenic crisis can progress quickly and needs hospital treatment. Report new chest pain, fainting, or severe infection symptoms promptly as well. Do not wait for a routine appointment when breathing or swallowing is becoming difficult.
