My Thumb Is Painful: What Should I Know?

Short answer
Thumb pain may follow overuse, injury, joint irritation, or tendon inflammation, so its pattern and associated symptoms guide the next step.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain may mean
Pain at the base of the thumb during gripping or pinching can involve the thumb joint. Pain along the wrist-side tendons, especially when lifting a child, opening a jar, or moving the thumb, can occur with De Quervain's tenosynovitis.
A fall may strain a ligament or cause a fracture. Numbness or tingling suggests that a nerve may also need assessment. The description alone cannot distinguish these causes.
Helpful steps
Rest from forceful gripping and repetitive thumb movements, and use the other hand for heavy tasks where possible. Keep the thumb and wrist moving gently if this is comfortable; avoid stretching into sharp pain.
A cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease symptoms after activity. A clinician can examine the thumb, check stability and sensation, and decide whether a splint, medicine, or imaging is appropriate. Do not self-start a medicine if you have been advised to avoid it.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment when pain persists, interferes with sleep or daily tasks, or returns each time you use the thumb. Seek urgent care after an injury if the thumb is visibly bent, markedly swollen, numb, blue or pale, or impossible to move.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Is the pain coming from a tendon, joint, ligament, or nerve? Would a thumb or wrist splint help? Which activities can I continue, and when should I begin strengthening?
