My skin itches all over: what should I know?

Itching may result from dry skin, eczema, an allergy, irritation from soaps or fabrics, or a medicine. It can also accompany liver, kidney, thyroid, blood, or immune problems. Some cancers can present with itching; for example, itching is a possible presentation of Hodgkin Lymphoma, but itching alone does not identify its cause. Itching around the vulva has different local causes and may occur with Vulvar Cancer, although non-cancerous conditions are common.

A clinician will consider where the itch is located, whether a rash is present, when it began, new products or medicines, and symptoms such as fever, night sweating, weight change, yellowing of the skin, or swollen glands.

Use fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, take lukewarm rather than hot showers, and choose gentle cleansers. Wear loose, breathable clothing and keep fingernails short to reduce skin damage from scratching. Record possible triggers, including new medicines, foods, detergents, and travel. Arrange a clinical review if the itch persists, spreads, disturbs sleep, or has no clear explanation; bring a list of medicines and supplements.

Seek urgent help for itching with facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. Contact a clinician promptly for yellow skin, dark urine, severe weakness, fever, drenching night sweating, unexplained weight change, or a new lump. These signs need assessment because they can reflect problems requiring treatment, not because they prove cancer.
