My Skin Is Peeling From Sunburn: What Should I Do?

How the structures involved in Sunburn differ from normal

Short answer

Peeling after sunburn means damaged surface skin is shedding as newer skin replaces it; keep the area cool and moisturised, do not pull the flakes away, and seek care for severe or worsening symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
Peeling skin can be tender and fragile after ultraviolet injury.
Gentle care
Cool the area, moisturise intact skin, and avoid pulling flakes or opening blisters.
Sun exposure
Cover the area and avoid direct sunlight while it heals.

What peeling means

Sunburn is an inflammatory injury caused by ultraviolet exposure. Redness, warmth, tenderness, tightness and later peeling can occur as the outermost damaged cells separate from the skin beneath. Peeling does not mean the area is ready for more sun; newly exposed skin remains sensitive and can burn again easily.

Avoid scratching or tugging at loose skin. Removing it can create raw areas and make irritation or infection more likely. Blisters may accompany a more intense burn, so leave them intact rather than opening them yourself. Skin peeling can also have causes other than sunburn; persistent or unexplained peeling deserves an assessment.

What to do at home

Cool the skin with a cool, damp cloth or a lukewarm shower. Pat dry, then apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Reapply when the area feels dry or tight; an emollient can reduce friction and support the skin barrier.

Wear loose, soft clothing and keep the burned area out of direct sunlight until it has healed. If exposure is unavoidable, cover the area with fabric and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on intact skin as directed on the product label. Drink fluids regularly, especially if the burn is extensive or you feel thirsty.

Do not use ice directly on the skin, scrub away flakes, peel blisters, or apply products that sting. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a medicine is suitable for pain or itch, particularly for a child, pregnancy, sensitive skin, or a history of reactions.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, severe pain, or a burn involving the eyes, face, hands, feet or genitals. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, difficulty drinking, or signs of dehydration.

Contact a clinician if redness spreads, pain worsens after initial improvement, or the skin develops pus, increasing warmth, red streaks or a worsening odour. These changes can indicate infection. Children, older adults and people with conditions or medicines that affect immunity may need earlier advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Does the area look like uncomplicated sunburn or another cause of peeling? Which moisturiser or pain-relief option fits my skin and medicines? How should I care for any blisters? When can I safely return to outdoor activities, and what protection should I use?

Questions people ask

Should I remove peeling skin after sunburn?

No. Let loose skin shed on its own, and avoid scratching, scrubbing or pulling it. Gentle washing and moisturising can reduce tightness and friction.

Can I put moisturiser on peeling sunburn?

A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser is generally suitable on intact skin. Stop if it stings or causes a rash, and ask a pharmacist or clinician about products for broken or blistered skin.

When is peeling after sunburn more concerning?

Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe symptoms, eye or facial involvement, or fever, faintness, confusion, vomiting, spreading redness or pus.
