My skin feels sensitive to touch

A stinging or tender surface with redness or scaling may reflect a damaged skin barrier or contact irritation. Atopic dermatitis can present with itchy, inflamed, dry skin. Rosacea may cause facial burning, warmth, flushing, or sensitivity. A rash around the mouth can occur with perioral dermatitis, especially after irritating products. Sensitivity without a visible rash can also follow friction, sun exposure, or a nerve-related problem; the exact pattern and any one-sided symptoms are useful clues.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a plain moisturiser. Pause exfoliating acids, scrubs, retinoids, fragrance, and newly introduced cosmetics until the skin is calmer. Protect exposed areas from sun and friction, and avoid rubbing or repeatedly checking the tender spot. Note the onset, body area, triggers, visible changes, and any burning, itch, numbness, or tingling.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden one-sided facial weakness, severe swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering near an eye, or a rapidly spreading painful rash. Arrange a dermatology review if sensitivity persists, recurs, interferes with sleep, or follows a new medicine or procedure. A visible rash may need targeted treatment rather than more skincare products.

Ask whether the pattern fits contact irritation, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis; which products to stop; and whether burning or altered sensation needs a separate evaluation.
