My right thumb is painful: what should I know?

Short answer
Right thumb pain may come from an irritated tendon, a joint problem, or an injury, and the location and movement that trigger it help guide assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain may mean
Pain along the thumb side of the wrist or at the base of the thumb can occur when the tendons that move the thumb become irritated. De Quervain's Tenosynovitis often hurts with lifting, gripping, opening a jar, or moving the thumb across the palm. A knock, twist, or fall can instead affect a ligament, bone, or joint. Aching that builds with repeated use differs from sudden pain with bruising, deformity, or loss of movement. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do now
Reduce movements that reproduce the pain, particularly repeated pinching and forceful gripping. Keep the thumb and wrist gently mobile within comfort rather than forcing a stretch. Cold wrapped in a cloth may soothe a recent flare for short periods; protect the skin and stop if it worsens symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a thumb support or pain medicine is suitable for you. Arrange assessment if pain continues, limits daily tasks, or follows an injury.
When to seek urgent care
Seek prompt care after a fall or impact if the thumb is visibly crooked, very swollen, numb, unstable, or difficult to move. Urgent review is also appropriate for spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, or severe pain. Get emergency help for a hand that becomes cold, pale, or blue.
Questions for your doctor
Is the pain coming from a tendon, joint, ligament, or bone? Would a thumb support help, and for which activities? What movements should I avoid while it settles? Do I need imaging after the injury or if movement remains limited?

Questions people ask
Why does thumb pain worsen when I grip?
Gripping loads the thumb tendons and joints, so irritation in those structures can become more noticeable during that task.
Can a thumb support help?
It may reduce aggravating movement for some tendon problems, but the fit and duration should be guided if pain persists.
