My right-hand fingers are numb: what should I know?

Tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers can occur when the median nerve is crowded at the wrist, as in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Numbness in the little and ring fingers may relate to pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow, as in Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. Neck nerve irritation, called Cervical Radiculopathy, can send altered sensation down the arm. Symptoms with arm heaviness, colour change, or swelling can involve structures near the shoulder and upper chest, including Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Numbness may also be temporary after leaning on an arm or sleeping awkwardly.

Note which fingers are affected, whether the palm or forearm is involved, and whether neck position, wrist bending, or elbow pressure changes the sensation. Keep the wrist in a neutral position during sleep, avoid resting your elbow on a hard surface, and take breaks from repetitive gripping. Do not use a tight splint without guidance if it increases tingling. Arrange a clinical assessment if the symptom persists, recurs, or interferes with writing, driving, or sleep. A clinician may check sensation, strength, reflexes, and movement before deciding whether tests are useful.

Seek emergency help for sudden numbness with facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe weakness, loss of balance, chest discomfort, or breathlessness. Seek prompt assessment after an injury if the hand is cold, pale or blue, severely painful, or difficult to move. Ongoing numbness with increasing weakness or frequent dropping of objects also deserves timely review.
