My left breast hurts but there are no lumps: what should I know?

Short answer
Left-sided breast pain without a lump can come from hormonal breast changes, chest-wall strain, infection or referred pain, and persistent or changing pain should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible sources of pain
Pain may vary with the menstrual cycle, breast movement, a bra that does not fit well, exercise, muscle strain or irritation of the ribs. Neck, shoulder or upper-back problems can also be felt in the breast area. Tenderness with warmth, redness or fever may point to inflammation or infection, especially during breastfeeding.
Breast pain alone is not a diagnosis of breast cancer, but breast cancer can present with breast changes that need evaluation. Pay attention to skin dimpling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge, a new thickened area, armpit swelling or a change in breast shape.
What you can do
Record when the pain occurs, how long it lasts, whether movement or touch changes it, and where you are in your cycle if relevant. Check whether a recent workout, injury, new medicine or change in breastfeeding could explain it. A supportive bra, gentle activity and simple pain relief that is safe for you may help; ask a pharmacist if you have medical conditions or take other medicines.
Arrange a clinical examination if pain persists, returns in one spot, interferes with sleep, or worries you. The clinician may decide whether imaging is useful based on your age, examination and history.
When to seek prompt care
Seek prompt care for a red, hot or rapidly swollen breast, fever, feeling very unwell, bloody or pus-like nipple discharge, a new fixed thickening, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or enlarged nodes in the armpit. Get urgent help for chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Does the pain seem to come from breast tissue or the chest wall? Do I need an examination or imaging? Could my cycle, medicines, injury or infection contribute? Which changes should make me return sooner?

Questions people ask
Can breast pain happen without a lump?
Yes. Hormonal changes, chest-wall strain, infection and referred pain can cause tenderness without a felt lump.
Does one-sided breast pain mean breast cancer?
No. Pain has many possible causes, but persistent or changing pain and any new breast or nipple change should be examined.
