Short answer

Itchy, swollen hands often come from skin irritation or an allergic response, but sudden severe symptoms need urgent attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Remove suspected irritants, rinse the skin, and take off tight jewellery.
Emergency sign
Mouth or throat swelling with breathing difficulty needs emergency help.

Look at the skin and timing

New soap, detergent, gloves, plants, metals, or cleaning products can irritate the skin or trigger contact dermatitis. Hives tend to be raised and change location, while dry, cracked skin may sting and itch. Swelling with warmth and pain rather than itch can point toward infection or injury. If several finger joints are stiff and swollen over time, inflammatory arthritis may be relevant; itchy swelling by itself does not diagnose Rheumatoid Arthritis. Note what touched your hands, how quickly symptoms appeared, and whether the rash is spreading.

Comfort measures

Rinse away a suspected irritant, remove rings and watches, and avoid scratching. Use a cool damp cloth and a plain fragrance-free moisturiser on intact skin. Do not apply a new cream or take an unfamiliar medicine if you suspect an allergy without checking with a pharmacist or clinician. Photograph a changing rash and keep a short trigger diary. Hand Swelling gives a broader overview of this symptom.

Urgent warning signs

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; wheezing; breathing difficulty; dizziness; or collapse. Seek same-day medical care if the hand becomes very painful, hot, rapidly red, drains pus, or is accompanied by fever. Get prompt assessment after an injury if swelling is substantial, the wrist looks misshapen, or fingers become numb or difficult to move. Recurrent episodes deserve a planned review to identify triggers and exclude other causes.

Useful questions

Ask which product or exposure is most suspicious, whether the skin barrier needs a prescribed treatment, and what to do if symptoms return. Mention new foods, medicines, insect stings, gloves, and any history of eczema or allergies. Ask whether joint stiffness or a previous wrist injury changes the assessment.
