My hand swelled up: what does it mean?

A single episode may be linked to a recent bump, strain, bite, skin irritation, or a small wound. The timing matters: swelling that appears after a fall can occur with a Distal Radius Fracture, while swelling in several finger joints with prolonged stiffness can be a presentation of Rheumatoid Arthritis. These possibilities cannot be separated from swelling alone. Note whether the hand is hot, tender, itchy, red, bruised, or difficult to move, and whether one or both hands are affected.

Take off rings and watches promptly. Pause activities that require gripping, keep the hand supported above heart level, and apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for brief intervals. Do not force stiff fingers through pain, puncture a blister, or use tight compression when circulation or sensation feels abnormal. If there is a cut, rinse it with clean running water and cover it. Photographing the swelling and recording when it began can help at an appointment.

Go for urgent assessment if the hand looks bent, fingers cannot move, pain is intense, sensation is lost, or fingers become blue, white, or cold. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth with fever, pus, or swelling after an animal or human bite. Book a clinical review when the swelling does not settle, keeps recurring, or makes writing, dressing, or gripping difficult.

Tell the clinician when the swelling began and ask whether you need an X-ray, treatment for inflammation or infection, or guidance from a physiotherapist. Mention all medicines, allergies, recent injuries, bites, and new products.
