Why does my hand hurt and look swollen?

Swelling after a fall or impact can occur with a Distal Radius Fracture or another injury, especially when the wrist or hand is tender and movement is limited. Swelling in several hand joints with prolonged stiffness can occur with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Warmth, redness, a wound, or worsening pain raises concern for infection or significant inflammation. Compare both hands and check whether you can gently open and close the fingers without severe pain.

Remove rings and watches promptly. Rest the hand, keep it raised, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods after a recent injury. Avoid tight wrapping unless a clinician has shown you how. Keep nearby joints gently mobile if that does not worsen pain, but do not force a deformed or very painful hand. Arrange an examination if swelling persists or the cause is unclear.

Seek urgent care for severe pain, deformity, inability to move the fingers, numbness, a cold or blue hand, or swelling after significant trauma. Get prompt medical attention for spreading redness, warmth, drainage, or fever. A review is appropriate when swelling returns, affects several joints, or interferes with work and daily tasks.
