My groin is very itchy: what should I know?

Check whether the itch affects the skin folds, inner thighs, genitals, or all of these areas. Note redness, a moist surface, scaling, small surrounding spots, cracks, sores, or a new soap, detergent, pad, lubricant, or clothing exposure.

Intertrigo develops where warm, damp skin rubs together and can cause soreness, redness, and itch. A skin yeast infection may thrive in these folds and produce a bright red, irritated rash with small spots near its edge. Irritant or allergic dermatitis can follow products or friction. Genital itch can also have causes that need an examination, so the appearance alone is not enough for diagnosis.

Rinse gently, pat completely dry, and change out of sweaty clothing promptly. Wear loose, breathable underwear and avoid fragranced washes, deodorants, powders, and scratching. Keep separate towels for the area and wash clothing regularly. If a clinician or pharmacist thinks fungus or yeast is involved, topical antifungal treatment may be appropriate; avoid combining multiple creams without advice.

Arrange prompt medical care for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, swelling, blisters, open sores, pus, fever, or pain when passing urine. Seek review when symptoms follow sexual contact, keep returning, involve the genitals, or fail to improve after removing an irritant and keeping the folds dry.
