My eyes are so itchy and dry

The tear film protects the eye surface. When it evaporates quickly or becomes uneven, the eyes may feel gritty, burning, tired, or itchy. Air conditioning, fans, smoke, long screen sessions, contact lenses, and some medicines can contribute. Allergic conjunctivitis can also cause itching and watering; allergic rhinitis, house dust mites, and pets may provide clues. Watery eyes can still feel dry when irritation causes reflex tearing that does not protect the surface well.

Take regular screen breaks, blink fully, and avoid air blowing directly at your face. Use a cool compress for itch and consider a humidifier if indoor air feels dry. Do not rub your eyes. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup while symptoms flare. A pharmacist or clinician can help select lubricating or allergy drops; avoid sharing bottles and follow the label. If a product stings persistently or symptoms worsen after starting it, stop and seek advice.

Seek urgent care for severe pain, sudden vision change, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, or swelling affecting breathing. Arrange an eye review for persistent one-sided symptoms, marked redness, discharge, or discomfort while wearing contact lenses. Repeated flares may need assessment for eyelid disease, allergy, tear-film problems, or medication effects.
