What should you know about intensely itchy eyes?

Itching with redness or watery eyes can occur after pollen, dust, cosmetics, contact lenses, or a new cream. Dry, cracked, or scaly skin around the lids may fit atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. A raised, migrating rash suggests hives. Scabies can cause intense itch elsewhere and may affect close contacts. Psoriasis, lichen planus, or a skin yeast infection are less typical possibilities that require examination rather than guesswork.

Do not rub the eyes, as rubbing can damage the surface and increase swelling. Wash hands, remove contact lenses, and stop new eye or facial products until the trigger is clearer. A cool clean compress can soothe closed eyelids. Avoid putting steroid or other medicated creams close to the eye unless prescribed. Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning or do not settle after removing a suspected irritant.

Get urgent help for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, pus, fever, injury, or difficulty opening the eye. Emergency care is needed for breathing difficulty, throat swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading facial swelling with an allergic reaction.

Ask whether the itch is coming from the eyelid skin, eye surface, or an allergy; which products and drops are safe; whether contact lenses should be paused; and what symptoms mean you should return urgently. Mention rashes, household symptoms, and recent exposures.
