My eyes are always red

Redness happens when small blood vessels on the eye surface become more visible. Allergic conjunctivitis commonly presents with itchy, watery, red eyes, while dry air, smoke, cosmetics, contact lenses, and screen strain can irritate the surface. Allergic rhinitis, house dust mite allergy, or pet allergy may bring nasal symptoms alongside eye symptoms. Sticky discharge, eyelid swelling, pain, or reduced vision points toward a different level of concern. Redness alone cannot tell you which condition is responsible.

Avoid rubbing your eyes and pause contact lens use while redness is present. Wash hands before touching the eyelids, keep cosmetics away from the eye, and use a cool compress for itch or warmth. Reduce smoke, dust, and strong fragrances around you. Note when symptoms appear, including after cleaning, being near animals, or spending time outdoors. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication or lubricating drops are suitable for you.

Get urgent help for severe eye pain, sudden vision change, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, or a red eye with nausea. Arrange prompt review for contact-lens-related redness, thick discharge, or symptoms that are worsening. Recurrent redness without pain still deserves an appointment when it does not settle, because an examination can distinguish surface irritation from inflammation or infection.
