My dad has stage 4 prostate cancer

The care team will clarify where the cancer has spread, how it is behaving, his general health, symptoms and previous treatment. The word stage describes the extent of disease; it does not describe one fixed experience or one treatment plan. Bone involvement can cause pain, weakness or fracture risk, while disease near the bladder or urinary passage can cause difficulty passing urine. Treatment choices may include medicines that affect cancer signalling, radiotherapy, targeted radioisotope therapy, or bone-strengthening therapy. Palliative care can be added at any stage to relieve symptoms and support the family.

Ask your dad what information he wants shared and take written notes to appointments if he agrees. Keep a list of medicines, pain, urinary changes, appetite, bowel symptoms and mobility. Ask which treatment goal applies now, how side effects will be managed, and whom to contact between visits. Depending on the plan, the team may discuss radiotherapy, brachytherapy, surgery such as prostate removal, or robotic cancer surgery; these options are not interchangeable and depend on the spread and his health.

Contact the care team promptly for new severe bone pain, a fall, inability to pass urine, blood in urine, fever during treatment, confusion, or rapidly worsening weakness. Sudden leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or loss of bladder or bowel control is an emergency because pressure near the spine may need immediate treatment. Use the team’s out-of-hours number when provided.
